BOB is a man with many interests and one of them is history – specifically pop culture. Check out a few pieces of BOB’s knowledge of what’s happened on this day!
- On August 1, 1981, MTV made history with its debut at 12:01 am – the first video to be shown was, appropriately, “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles.
- The same year, summer rock anthem turned wedding reception/karaoke favorite “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield hit #1 on the charts, and we learned that as long as it’s sung about in a catchy tune, crushing on your best friend’s girl is totally cool?
- Six years later, in 1987, “Shakedown” by Bob Seger hit #1 after its debut on the soundtrack for the popular film that year “Beverly Hills Cop II.” The next year, “Shakedown” was nominated for both the Academy Award for Best Original Song and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, but it lost both awards to Dirty Dancing‘s “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.”
- That same year, up-and-coming hair band Guns N’ Roses shot their first video, for a song you might’ve heard of called “Welcome to The Jungle,” which in 2009 was named the greatest hard rock song of all time by VH1.
- Finally, who can forget the 1994 moment when the King of Pop and the daughter of the King of Rock and Roll, Michael Jackson, and Lisa Marie Presley, revealed to the public that they had been married eleven weeks before. The couple divorced two years later but remained on-and-off for another four years.
