This year is the Harvest Moon, which means it will also be a “micro moon,” making the moon appear dim and much smaller because it will be concurrent with the point in the moon’s orbit when it’s furthest from Earth.
The reason why it’s called “Harvest Moon” is because this full moon is the closest one to the Fall Equinox. Since this year’s equinox is on September 23rd, tonight’s moon gets to hold the title.
A full moon is only completely full when it’s EXACTLY 180 degrees opposite the sun. For us, it’ll happen at around 11:33pm.
This is the first time in 19 years that full moon has landed on Friday the 13th! Take advantage and don’t miss out on this rare night because the next full moon that will fall on this day won’t be until August 2049.
