The Cars lead singer Ric Ocasek died in his townhouse on Sunday.
The New York Police Department responded to a call at around 4pm about an “unconscious male.” The iconic artist died of hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. He had been recovering from surgery when the sudden death occurred. Pulmonary emphysema was also a contributing factor.
The Cars were a New Wave sensation in the late 1970s and early ’80s. From pop to punk-rock incorporated in their style, the band had over 10 Top 40 singles. Ocasek was well-known for his pitch-black hair paired with black sunglasses.
Aside from vocals, the artist was the band’s lead songwriter and played rhythm guitar. Look back at their early ’80s hit “Drive.”
