The holiday season called for some quality time with the family. That meant watching Netflix’s latest superhero movie We Can Be Heroes, directed by Robert Rodriguez.
Between Christmas and New Year’s, 44 million households viewed the family superhero movie, which was filmed right here in Austin! The standalone sequel to the 2005 film The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl immediately became one of Netflix’s biggest hits. Best part of it all, a sequel has officially been confirmed!

The new film is currently in development, and will return with the star-studded film cast. The talented actors who appeared on the big screen included a comeback of Taylor Dooley, who played Lavagirl in the 2005 film, Pedro Pascal, Christian Slater, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
Additionally, the Netflix film featured a lovely cover of David Bowie’s classic track “Heroes” by Haley Reinhart. With the stars aligned, Reinhart coincidentally released the track on Bowie’s birthday, January 8. The artist tweeted about the “kismet” moment and thanked director Robert Rodriguez for incorporating the enchanting cover in We Can Be Heroes.
