Ed Sheeran is heading to court. The singer-songwriter is being accused of plagiarism for his hit song, “Thinking Out Loud.”
The claims come from Marvin Gaye, who says Sheeran copied “substantial musical elements” from his 1973 song “Let’s Get It On.”
Sheeran appealed to drop the copyright infringement lawsuit, but a U.S. district judge rejected the request. According to Judge Louis Stanton, he found a similarity between the songs bass lines and percussion.
Now, it is up to the jury, Sony/ATV Music Publishing and Atlantic Records to decide if Sheeran should be responsible for repaying the beneficiaries of Gaye and Ed Townsend, who is the producer that helped co-write “Let’s Get It On.”
